DAVID CANNON THE AFGHAN RUG

DAVID CANNON

By Mélina Gazsi

From Canada to the floors of London, David Cannon tells us the story of a symbol-laden Afghan rug that became the centerpiece of his home.

“At the beginning of my life, I was not interested in rugs. I grew up in Canada, where we readily threw them away to replace them with carpets, thicker and warmer for the cold winters.” Having lived in London for 30 years, when David Cannon and his family moved into an apartment in St John’s Wood, the first thing they did was replace the carpet with solid wood flooring. On which they placed this rug.

A journey from Afghanistan to Liberty

This rug is likely over 20 years old and has quite a history. Woven by a family in Afghanistan, it bears marks of wear, showing that it was used by them and perhaps others, before being sold again and again, until it ended up in the Liberty store in central London where it was purchased.

Symbolism and Serenity

One can discover a multitude of symbols and geometric shapes, but no animals or human figures. It is actually a complicated design, inspired by nature. However, the depth and richness of the colors give this rug both a complex personality and a tranquil disposition.
