GERMANY
ICONIC PLACES

By Mélina Gazsi

From the cradle of the Bauhaus in Weimar to the experimental Vitra campus, a journey into the heart of German rigor and innovation.

Germany is inseparable from the history of modern design. It is here that the desire to unite art and industry was born, a philosophy that continues to live on through exceptional institutions.

The Historic Schools

  • Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: The founding myth. Specializing in artistic and technical fields, it was founded in 1860 before being renamed “Bauhaus” in 1919 by Walter Gropius, marking the beginning of the modern era.
  • Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Offenbach: Located near Frankfurt, it is a leading university of art and design, recognized for its conceptual approach and its openness to new technologies.

Must-See Museums

  • Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein): A mandatory pilgrimage. This museum, a sculptural work by Frank Gehry, belongs to the Swiss manufacturer Vitra. It presents major exhibitions on architecture and furniture design in an architectural campus unique in the world.
  • Bauhaus Museum Dessau: Inaugurated for the school’s centenary, this museum located in the municipal park embodies the “Less is more” principle dear to Mies van der Rohe. Designed by Addenda Architects, it is a glass showcase that dialogues with history.
