ITALY
LAND OF DESIGN

By Mélina Gazsi

From the Milan Triennale to avant-garde galleries, an overview of the institutions that make Italy the beating heart of global creation.

Italy does not just publish design; it teaches, exhibits, and celebrates it. Milan, the epicenter of this effervescence, brings together the most prestigious institutions.

The Schools of Excellence

  • Politecnico di Milano (Milan): A global reference. This engineering and design school is renowned for its architecture and industrial design programs. It is regularly ranked among the best art and design universities in Europe.
  • Istituto Europeo di Design (IED): Founded in 1966, this private school is a pillar of education in design, fashion, and communication. It now radiates far beyond Milan, with campuses in Rome and Turin.

The Temples of Design (Museums)

  • Triennale di Milano: Located in the heart of Milan, it is much more than a museum. It is a living institution dedicated to the culture of design, decorative arts, graphics, architecture, and fashion.
  • Museo del Design Italiano: The guardian of memory. This museum is the reference point for the preservation of the history of Italian design, offering an exceptional collection of iconic objects, installations, and projects.

Must-See Galleries

  • Galleria Carla Sozzani: Founded by the famous eponymous gallery owner, this 500 sqm space (often linked to the 10 Corso Como concept store) presents cutting-edge exhibitions mixing design, photography, and fashion.
  • Galleria Massimo De Carlo: One of the most influential contemporary art and design galleries. It represents Italian and international artists and designers through innovative projects that often challenge conventions.
